Holy Baptism is for families who are sharing in the regular life of the parish and are known by the parish. Each candidate for Holy Baptism is to be sponsored by one or more baptized persons of the parish. Sponsors of adults and older children present their candidates and thereby signify their endorsement of the candidates and their intention to support them by prayer and example in their Christian life.
Sponsors of infants, commonly called godparents, present their candidates, make promises in their own names, and also take vows of support for their candidates. The congregation gathered for Baptism also promises to support the candidate in their life in Christ. It is fitting that parents be included among the godparents of their own children. Parents and godparents are to be instructed in the meaning of Baptism, in their duties to help the new Christians grow in the knowledge and love of God, and in their responsibilities as members of Christ’s Church.
Families who are unaffiliated with the parish life of Grace Church and who seek Holy Baptism are invited to become a part of our regular fellowship and worship before pursuing Baptism. Families who live in other areas distant from Grace Church can be assisted in identifying an Episcopal parish nearer their home.
Baptism is especially appropriate during Easter, on the Day of Pentecost, the Sunday after All Saints’ Day (Nov. 1), and on the Feast of the Baptism of our Lord (the First Sunday after the Epiphany in January). It is recommended that, as far as possible, Baptisms be reserved for these occasions or when a bishop is visiting. Baptisms are not conducted during Advent (December), Christmas Eve/Day, Lent (prior to Easter), or when the Rector is not available.
