"Saving Bibliography: Recommended Reading, Resources and Reference materials
Rives, Barclay, “A History of Grace Church, Walker’s Parish, Cismont, Virginia”,
 ©Barclay Rives, 2010
Bates, Niya Marie, “Blurred Lines: African American Community, Memory, and Preservation in the Southwest Mountains Rural Historical District”, a thesis presented to the faculty of the Department of History of the school of architecture in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the degree Master of Architectural History”, April 2015

Significant References to works on black history selected from Bates
by Ashley M. Williams, June 16, 2020 Notes -bibliography

  1. “Titustown” - Anthony Aery: Pamphlet included in the Southern Workman. From a comparison standpoint I think that it would be an interesting read considering Aery describes an African American community near Norfolk, VA. He describes the community as “comfortable and attractive”, how does that compare to the community of Cismont?
  2. “The American Negro” - Carter G. Woodson: Although, Bates says this text works off of black stereotypes I think that it would be a good reference when comparing the views of whites towards African Americans.
  3. “All Our Kin” - Carol Stack: This would be a good reference as far as context about domestic networks.
  4. “A Study of Ten Black Baptist Churches in Albemarle County” - Rosanna Gene Liebman, Matilda McQuaid, K. Edward Lay: Good as a reference to the subject of black churches.
  5. “Crafting Lives: African American Artisans in New Bern, North Carolina” - Bashir : Close analysis of free and enslaved African American artisans in the urban environment of New Bern.
  6. “Wait and Hope” - Louisa H.A. Minor: This is a good reference to get a first person view of slave and slaveowner relationships. This is also a solid reference when thinking about the connections formed within the church, and how a place to worship was crucial.
