                                  Jefferson Symposium at Grace

On April 13, 2024, from 9-1, Grace will host a symposium that will examine the various influences on Jefferson’s view of religion and religious freedom in his youth and early maturity.  It will focus on key figures in his education, particularly the Reverend James Maury and Dr. William Small at William & Mary, and the experience of religious dissent and sectarian conflict in local colonial circumstances.  The symposium will conclude with a summation of Jefferson’s views as a young man at the time he moved to Monticello in 1770 and how those views presaged his authorship of the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom and his subsequent support of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

The symposium will be divided into three one-hour sessions covering successive periods of Jefferson’s early life. The symposium will be led by a panel of three experts:
  • John Ragosta: Dr. Ragosta is currently interim director and historian of the Robert H. Smith International Center for Jefferson Studies at Monticello and a fellow of the Foundation for Virginia Humanities. Dr. Ragosta is an award-winning author of several books including Religious Liberty: Jefferson’s Legacy and America’s Creed. Dr. Ragosta earned his Ph.D. and J.D. at the University of Virginia and has been on the faculty of the UVA History Department and the Law School.
  • Martin Clagett: Dr. Clagett is the world’s expert on William Small, and author of A Spark of Revolution: William Small, Thomas Jefferson, and James Watt: The Curious Connection Between the American Revolution and the Industrial Revolution among other books.  He earned his doctorate at Virginia Commonwealth University and has been a research fellow at William and Mary and at the University of Virginia.
  • Dr. Alyssa Penick: Dr. Penick is a scholar of church, state, and slavery in 18th century Virginia and Maryland, who is currently a Research Associate with the Center for the Study of the Age of Jefferson at the University of Virginia.  She is the author of American Reformation: Church, State, and Property in the Revolutionary Chesapeake.  She holds her doctorate from the University of Michigan.
Each presentation will be followed by a question and answer/discussion period.  At the conclusion of the symposium a light lunch will be provided and will serve as an occasion for further discussion.

RSVP required no later than March 28th to reserve your space and to facilitate an accurate lunch count – lunches are limited to the first 75 people who register.
