Invitation to a Holy Lent at Grace Church 2020
An overview of our observances and resources this Lent:
Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper and Mardi Gras Party, February 25, 5:30-7pm
The last day before Lent will be celebrated with our usual pancake supper with all the trimmings and some new Mardi Gras fun. We will also burn the palms from last year’s Palm Sunday and make the ashes for Ash Wednesday.
Ash Wednesday Services, February 26, Noon and 7pm:
Lent is a season for self-examination and spiritual renewal in Christ, beginning with Ash Wednesday. There will be a noon said service of Holy Eucharist and a 7pm Choral Holy Eucharist.
The “Anglican/Episcopal Church in Virginia” Lecture Series, March 3, 24 and April 28, 7pm:
In honor of our 275th anniversary year, Dr. Robert Prichard will be giving these special history presentations at Grace.
Open Church, Wednesdays, March 4 through April 8 from 5-7pm:
Bring some devotional reading, use the prayer book resources, pray, or just be quiet for a while in this sacred space.
Adult Forum: Paul’s Letter to the Christians of Rome, Wednesdays, March 4 through April 1, 7-8:30pm:
Dr. Harry Gamble leads us in reading and studying this New Testament book.
Historic Prayer Book Liturgies, March 8, 15, 22, 29, at 11am:
Also in honor of our 275th anniversary year, we will be praying the Holy Communion liturgies of the last four editions of the Book of Common Prayer which have been a part of the American experience.

Three Notch’d Road Concert: “Ever Ancient, Ever New: Bach and Nowakowski on the Soul’s Awakening, March 8, 4pm
Kimberly Marshall: “Bach’s Birthday Organ Recital”, March 22, 4pm
Holy Week:
Palm/Passion Sunday, April 5, 9 & 11am
Maundy Thursday, April 9, 7pm and Good Friday, April 10, noon
Easter Sunday, April 12, 9am & 11am with Flowering of the Cross, Easter Pageant, and Egg Hunt; Choral Evensong and Recital by Artist-in-Residence Erik Wm. Suter, 4pm

“Reflections of Grace 2020”, with daily devotions written by parishioners.
“Daily Devotions for Individuals and Families”: simple one-page devotions for four-times a day in the prayer book, pages 136-140. Experiment with saying these during Lent.
“Lenten Madness”: a fun way to learn about the Christian saints, especially for the sports-minded, using a tournament-like single elimination bracket. https://www.lentmadness.org/about/.
“Loving your neighbor as yourself” (Mark 12:31): Your compassion and service for those in need is a resource for renewal close-at-hand.
